PRAGUE WINTER: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War, 1937-1948 by Madeleine Korbel Albright
Madeleine Albright was fifty nine when she learned from a reporter that her ancestral heritage was Jewish and she had lost more than two dozen relatives in the Holocaust. This revelation led her to seek answers by visiting small towns in Czechoslavakia where her parents had lived. She also found the ancient synogogue where the victims names were enscribed on the walls.

PRAGUE WINTER is a story of history and personal trauma told in a moving and vivid style. The prose is taut and powerful and Albright recounts a harrowing tale. Besides being a personal memoir, PRAGUE WINTER is a history lesson and a very inspiring one.

Madeleine Albright served as America's sixty fourth secretary of state from 1997 to 2001. Her distinguished career led to many Washington appointments. She resides in Washington, D. C. and Virginia.

I remember hearing an interview with Albright on NPR a few years ago during which she talked about discovering her ancestry. Recall thinking that the story was more interesting then many works of fiction. Consequentially this looks to be very interesting! Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to imagine she had no idea about her ancestry..nonetheless it sounds like a book worth reading. She is a remarkable woman and the book is well researched and very detailed (in a good way).

Memoirs are personal favorite, besides having read quite a few biographies and memoirs on the Holocaust. On this one however, for the very fact Ms. Albright didn't know of her heritage, sounds like it will be a very interesting discovery.
