BOOKS THAT DID NOT MAKE THE TOP TEN.... (BUT SHOULD HAVE)

The past few weeks lists have been lying in wait everywhere describing the 100 Notable Books, the 10 Best Books, the 15 Best Mysteries and I could go on and on. I even posted a list of the Most Overrated Books on this blog (scroll down)which of course was very relevant!!!  I am tired of it all, so I've compiled a short list of  books that were ignored by listmakers but definetly worth reading.

THE LOST WIFE by ALYSON RICHMAN
This is a tense wartime tale of first love that was inspired by a
true story. "The novel explores the power of human resilience and the
strength of memory" ( I am currently reading this book..so far it's slow moving and predictable...hoping for improvement)
UPDATE: THE LOST WIFE SHOULD REMAIN LOST AND NEVER FOUND...DID NOT FINISH...DISJOINTED, BORING AND PREDICTABLE..NOW I KNOW WHY IT NEVER MADE A TOP TEN LIST.

THE DOVEKEEPERS by ALICE HOFFMAN
I am an Alice Hoffman fan and have read all of her books. This novel
combines fiction and fact in a passionate saga of four women who come together to tend the doves of Massada.

COCKTAIL HOUR UNDER THE TREE OF FORGETFULNESS  by
ALEXANDRA FULLER
Fuller's parents are the subject of this critically acclaimed memoir. It tells    the story of their lives as white immigrants in a country that was experiencing massive upheaval.

CHANGO'S BEADS AND TWO-TONE SHOES by WILLIAM KENNEDY
The author of Ironweed uses a three act set-up to recreate Havana and
America from 1936 to 1968. The novel was labeled a "serio-comedy" about
love and revolution. Even Ernest Hemingway makes an appearance ( I love anything Hemingway related!)

BOOKS READ UNDER A DATE PALM!

 (12/24/2011)

THE SENSE OF AN ENDING by JULIAN BARNES
This beautiful book is worthy of the 2011 Man Booker Award. A short novel exquisitely written combines mystery and loss. The complex characters are what's important rather than a story line..very philosophical, poignant and powerful

UPDATE: WHAT I AM NOT READING. (12/22/2011)

Just abandoned THE LITAGATORS by John Grisham. Very slow moving and predictable...Read about half...Expected some intrigue and better character development...just plain boring!!!

Also will return to CATHERINE THE GREAT...a good historical novel but got redundant and I needed a break!(I think Catherine did too)

UPDATE: WHAT I AM READING (12/18/2011)

I am surrounded by the Caribbean, white sand and Palm Trees while reading THE GRIEF OF OTHERS  by LEAH HAGEN COHEN, otherwise I would slowly be sinking into a deep depression.
The book chronicles the death of a newborn and a family's reawakening. Beautifully written in a unique style,  the author uses colons, commas and rambling sentences that combined result in stunning prose.
This is a haunting tale that you won't forget.

V  IS FOR VENGEANCE BY SUE GRAFTON (12/28/2011)
This is a lighthearted mystery...a great vacation read. Fun and quirky...stylish prose, inventive characters and written by a very successful mystery writer who favors a letter of the alphabet in all her titles.

For more information scroll down to Books to Take on Vacation
        OVERRATED BOOKS OF 2011

Book editors and critics are posting Best Books of 2011!  For a change of
pace, here's a list of titles that I thought were overrated and disappointing. Keep in mind, it's my opinion and some of my followers' opinions

Have fun disagreeing with me!!  (Or agreeing!)

OVERRATED AND DISAPPOINTING - FICTION

   1.   THE ART OF FIELDING by  Chad Harbach

   2.   THE LEFTOVERS by Tom Perotta

    3.    A VISIT FROM THE GOON SQUAD by Jennifer Egan

   4.   THIS BEAUTIFUL LIFE by  Helen Shulman

NON-FICTION - COMMENTS BY REVIEWER GHS

1. CLEOPATRA by Stacy Schiff-    Overloaded backstabbing  and endless   characters

 2. THE PROMISE by Jonathan Alter-    Love this author and the subject, but much too detailed. Needed a good editor!

COMMENTS FROM BLOG READERS

Joyce's Choices contains short descriptions of books along with some

commentary. You may not agree with the choices or opinions but you're welcome to post your comments (especially if you disagree!)
I'm just a click away!

ANONYMOUS .....  Joyce, I like baseball but could not get into The Art of Fielding. The Leftovers was a big disappointment because Perotta is one of my favorite writers. I really like your opinions and have found the blog very helpful in selecting books.

P. ONSLOW ....  Thanks for the "overrated reviews". It’s a big help. I was thinking of
reading a few of those books and the review is a time saver.

CFW....Thank you.  I have made out my list.  Your summaries are welcomed and appreciated

Bookluva....I didn't agree with your opinion of The Marriage Plot.  I liked it although it was nowhere near as good as Middlesex.  Overall I think your comments are right on target.

8.  Maine by Courtney Sullivan- Everyone has secrets and these believable characters share a history of guilt, tension, and dysfunction. (Ah, the ties that bind a family together!!).."well written and compelling...."
9.  The Sisters by Nancy Jenkins- Favorable review in the Times today.... it covers three generations of women inspired by the author's true story.  Sounds like the review of Maine (above)..

READERS' CHOICES (12/3/11)

Since I've started this blog I've heard from many readers.  Everyone has been so enthusiastic and of course everyone wants to share their book recommendation...so here's a few!!

THE NIGHT CIRCUS BY ERIN MORGANSTERN
(This book was recommended by a reader on the treadmill at the gym between gasps!!)
Supposedly "magical" about two illusionists bound to each other in a contest that will span their lives. "Beautifully Written" ...."Many Stories Intertwined" ...Involves a mysterious circus and it's two stars. (Was chosen by Amazon as September's Best Book.)

SOMEONE KNOWS MY NAME BY LAWRENCE HILL
My friend, Faye recommended this book. She claims it was the best book she ever read, and she reads a lot!!! Reviewers labeled this book as "stunning" and "wrenching". It depicts a woman who has journeyed through slavery and inhumanity ....."Stunning historical fiction based on fact"

CROOKED LETTER, CROOKED LETTER BY TOM FRANKLIN
"Rockport,"another blog reader, recommended this book by Edgar Award winning author Tom Franklin.
The novel revolves around two men who were childhood friends.  It's an emotional poignant story leading to a girl's disappearance, racial tension, and buried secrets. One reviewer called it "A ripping good mystery"

NEW YORK BY EDWARD RUTHERFORD
"Rockport" also recommended  this book, which is an "engrossing saga combining a cast of fictional and true characters whose fates rise and fall."  Reviewers say it keeps readers engaged throughout and is a  "great novel about a great city."

NEW BOOK ALERTS!!!!! (11/29/11)

Book Alerts will be posted when new books worth noting appear on the scene!

CATHERINE THE GREAT BY  ROBERT MASSEY..."Dynamic biography" of a fascinating woman!
UPDATE: A reader reported that once you get through the "slow first three chapters" it takes off and he's really enjoying it! I just started it and predict it will be a detailed, rich biography.

THE PILGRIM BY HUGH  NISSENSON.... A young man's life depicted in a powerful story. Good historical fiction if that's your thing....

THE GRIEF OF OTHERS BY LEAH HAGER COHEN...Janet Maslin is my favorite New York Times Reviewer and this book is one of  her top choices for best book of 2011. If you like to read about family drama, dysfunction and turmoil  (Who doesn't?!!)  this is the book to read.  I personally can't wait to start it!!

I AM CURRENTLY READING....(11/27/11)
HUNTING AND GATHERING BY ANNA GAVALDA...I am in the middle of this book and really am enjoying it. (The  author is a well known French novelist.) It's a novel about "misfits" living  in the same building in Paris who create a compelling world of their own. My niece, an artist who lives and paints in Oregon raved about this book and so far I have to agree with her.....UPDATE: Halfway through and would give it mixed reviews so far...
CATHERINE THE GREAT BY ROBERT K. MASSIE    (12/3/11)
(See comments above in Book Alerts)  So far it is very compelling and can't wait to get back to it !

READER POLL: RULES OF CIVILITY BY AMOR TOWLES/ 2011 FAVORITE

BORING BOOK ALERT!!
I AM READING THE ART OF FIELDING BY CHAD HARBACH...VERY SLOW MOVING ...(MAYBE YOU NEED TO BE INTO BASEBALL).....HELP! 400 MORE PAGES!!!! SO FAR THIS IS A NO HITTER!!!!              UPDATE: ABANDONED

THE LEFTOVERS by TOM PERROTTA
This is another book I would not recommend! It is well written using satire and humor while exploring the possibility of people just "up and disappearing", never to return. How would those remaining  respond and cope?  Frankly, after awhile I really didn't care...Skip this one.....!!!!!
POST A COMMENT IF YOU DISAGREE  (OR AGREE) WITH THESE OPINIONS.....

NEWS!!
One of my favorite authors, Anne Tyler is coming out with a new book,  THE BEGINNERS GOODBYE...but not until April....always worth the wait.

DECEMBER CHOICES and NEW REVIEWS (11/27/11)

The holidays are approaching and books make a great gift (but only for someone who enjoys reading.... otherwise jewelry!!!!) so hit the bookstores... or if you are traveling, start downloading books on your kindle!!

HERE'S A FEW GIFT SUGGESTIONS!

STEVE JOBS BY WALTER ISAACSON...A collection of forty interviews with Jobs, his family, friends, competitors..and many others....makes a great gift!

PILGRIMAGE BY ANNIE LEIBOVITZ.... An exciting collection of photos taken by Leibovitz when not on assignment. Interesting text as well as dynamic photography.

JACK KENNEDY/ELUSIVE HERO BY CHRISTOPHER MATTHEWS...This biography is based on personal interviews with those closest to JFK. Written in typical Matthews conversational style, it conveys a different JFK than other bios have depicted.

11/22/63 BY STEVEN KING
Gary S, my non-fiction reviewer informed me that Steven King just came out with an 849 page epic about a man who travels back in time to prevent the JFK assassination. I'm not a Steven King fan but have read some of his books and have found them very suspenseful and sometimes just plain insane!!!!... but always well written....not sure about attempting 849 pages!!.....probably won't.....(A great gift for a Steven King fan!)

NEW REVIEWS IN FICTION AND NON-FICTION

ZERO DAY BY DAVID BALDACCI    (11/28/11)
Typical Baldacci fast moving crime thriller!  Probably not the most original story line, but a fast read, short chapters, and lots of action....Good read for holiday travelers!

COCKTAIL HOUR UNDER THE TREE OF FORGETFULNESS   BY ALEXANDER FULLER
Reviewers have praised this memoir  for the author's great writing style and insights about her family's exotic life in Africa. . "A classic is born in this tender, intensely moving journey" (Publisher's Weekly).. Also my cousin, Monica, who was born in Khartoum gave it a great review and she's very convincing!

THE  BITTER SEA; COMING OF AGE IN CHINA BEFORE MAO BY CHARLES N. LI
My friend Joan, who is in a book group in Boston recommended this book. She said it is an unforgettable true story of a young man, his father and his country.....A candid memoir beautifully written...(I have already downloaded it!!)

HAND ME DOWN WORLD BY LLOYD JONES
This book was recommended by my friend, Marlene who encouraged me to write this blog! She is a really dedicated reader and I usually like what she recommends!(Not this time!)
Lloyd Jones wrote Mr Pip ( which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and my  summer book group's selection)  His new novel, Hand Me Down World  is the story of a young African mother's journey to reclaim her stolen infant son. It's been labeled compelling, extraordinary and thought provoking.

UPDATE: Very disappointing and slow moving.  Story starts well but slowly  winds down..to simply boring

GHS AND NONFICTION (PART 2) 11/12/11

The following two well researched books on the civil war by James Swanson will keep you RIVITED! One book focuses on the assasination of Linclon and the hunt for his killer.  The other book contrasts two stories taking place at the same time...one of national mourning after Lincoln was shot and how union troops hunted down and eventually captured confederate president Jefferson Davis.

MANHUNT: THE 12 DAY CHASE TO CATCH LINCOLN'S KILLER
What I love about this book is that Swanson puts you right in the theater with Lincoln, in the streets of Washington DC and with the union troops that hunted down John Wilkes Booth.  In addition to Lincoln, attempts were made on his cabinet too which caused great fear about a last ditch attempt by the defeated south to overturn the outcome of the war.  It's a real thriller!!!

BLOODY CRIMES:THE FUNERAL OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND CHASE FOR JEFFERSON DAVIS
For me, this was the story they don't tell you about in school-and it's FASCINATING!! We learn about Jefferson Davis, the confederate president and how he lived and survived during the last stand of the confederacy.
The other story (told in alternating chapters) is about the funeral of Lincon as his body toured cities  throughout the country(I sometimes skipped this part because I was more interested in the Jefferson Davis story)..but that's my preference. Either way it's a great book!!

BOOK GROUP BUZZ ( 11/10/11)

Book groups shed light on so many wonderful books and also many not so wonderful!! Are your book discussions exciting and sprited?  Does someone never shut up? What's unique about your group? Let me know.!
My college friend, Nancy lives on Cape Cod  and is a member of a couples book group. In some cases that really works..in other cases it can work like a bad marriage!  In her case, she says her group is a "great mix of interesting people" and these are her recommendations:

A GOOD FALL by HA JIN....I mentioned this prize winning author in an earlier post.  The Good Fall is a collection of  12 short stories set in Flushing, New York which is one of New York's largest Chinese immigrant communities.  It is based on the immigrant experience told with simplicity, great incite, and paints a true picture of a neighborhood and a people.

FOR ALL THE TEA IN CHINA (How England Stole the World's Favorite Drink and Changed History) by SARAH ROSE   (NON FICTION)
A lively account of the adventures of Robert Fortune's acquisition of Chinese tea seedlings for transplanting in British India.  A true story delivered  in a riviting style combines history, adventure and great storytelling!

DESERT QUEEN BY  JANET WALLACH  (BIOGRAPHY)
An amazing story of Gertrude Bell, the subject of this biography. A Victorian woman, Bell traveled to the Arab world and became extremely influential during World War 1.  She  was highly respected by the most prominent Arab sheiks and became a major figure in modern day Iraq.

NEW IN NOVEMBER!! (11/12/11)

Before I mention new titles here's my last comment about the much hyped novel, THE MARRIAGE PLOT by EUGENIDES (a  former favorite author)  It left me disappointed! I can't deny it is beautifully written. Of the three main characters the only life-like one is Leonard, the manic depressive! It was a tedious read until Leonard entered the picture...
Overall the mind-numbing details take away from the novel....I easily skipped parts without missing a thing !!

Now for new titles!!

HA -JIN the well known author of WAITING (an excellent book)  is debuting his new book NANJING REQUIEM. This is the story of a missionary who helped protect and shelter Chinese citizens during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing in 1938. Should be a good historical novel.

SUE GRAFTON  fans will be happy to hear that her new book V IS FOR VENGEANCE  is being released November 14th.

PAULINE KAEL: A LIFE IN THE DARK by Brian Kellow has gotten excellent press. The story is told mostly through Kael's reviews (some very notorious) and if you are a film devotee...or not... it sounds like a good read!

THE NIGHT STRANGERS by Chris Bohjalian is his latest ...I liked Midwives but this sounds like a
witchcraft theme and has a lot to do with herbalists...not so sure..(unless your into Botany)

IF JACK'S IN LOVE by Steven Wetta is a first novel told with truth, humor and angst of a teenage hero.
Sounds like a touching novel told by an author who's personal experiences influenced his writing.

LAST MAN IN TOWER by Aravind  Adiga is a story of money and power by the author of The White Tiger. Takes place in a rapidly changing India...suspense and vivid portrayals of people pushed to their limits

RANDOM THOUGHTS!! (11/5/11)

Why is my Introduction appearing at the end of the Blog?   Why is everything indented???

Anyway, now that I have a Bloody Mary in hand!!!!.... I am calmer and I'm told the blog format is "back to front"..the oldest post being last...

I am plodding through THE MARRIAGE PLOT  by EUGENIDES....slowly... plodding......I take back my earlier review. I'm 80% invested so I'll finish it off eventually......

CHECK BACK FOR MORE REVIEWS AND COMMENTS...(They'll appear somewhere..?!)

REVIEWER GHS AND NON-FICTION (PART 1) (11/4/11)

"I like to learn things as well as be entertained. For example, reading about the Lincoln Assasination
I realized there was a parallel to what we experienced during 9/11. I particularly like reading about politics, financial crisis and scandals...also American  history and World War 2.
Here's what I am currently reading:

THE END by Ian Kershaw.
This is a detailed story about how the Nazi Party was able to fight (using organization and terror) to the very end and how Hitler was able to rule and issue orders even though the war was lost. It's not a Holocaust story or a military story ...but how a small group could dominate a nation until the bitter end.

ONCE UPON A CAR by Bill Vlasic
I recommend this book to  my clients. It's based on hundreds of interviews and goes behind the scenes of GM, Ford and Chrysler. It has a "real- time" feel  and lots of suspense even though you know the outcome.

BOOMERANG by Michael Lewis
Lewis highlights the absurd(but true)things that financial markets have taken as credible. This book is an excellent history of the financial crisis. His first book was Liar's Poker written about 25 years ago and if you were to read it now, you would realize that the seeds of  our current financial crisis were planted back in the 80's.

AND MORE FICTION REVIEWS....

DRINKING CLOSER TO HOME BY JESSICA  ANYA BLAU
This is a smart book..It will make you cringe as well as laugh outloud. Parental love, booze,  and drugs
combine to make this a very absorbing read.

A FRIEND OF THE FAMILY BY LAUREN GRODSTEIN
This book traces a suburban crisis with special emphasis on a father-son relationship. It's a gripping account of parental love gone astray. A wonderful and compelling read!

FICTION FAVORITES

THE PARIS WIFE BY PAULA McCLAIN
If you are a Hemingway fan this book is for you! Even  if you are not...this novel is a great look at
Jazz-age Paris. It gives you an inside view of flawed people struggling against impossible odds.. Loved it!

STRANGER ON THE PLANET BY ADAM SCHWARTZ
This novel is funny, honest and obsessive! It's the tale of a dysfunctional Jewish family in the sixties written with great humor and angst. It is compulsively readable and a page -turner.!!!

FATHER OF THE RAIN BY LILY KING
Winner of the New England Book Award for Fiction, this novel is compelling and uplifting . It is a
gripping epic about a daughter and father in a family ridden with addiction and mental illness.

A FICTION MIX

THE ART OF FIELDING BY CHAD HARBACH
Reviewers have praised this debut novel. Although the title is a reference to baseball, the novel explores much more...like affairs, relationships, rejection and joy...a simple, moving book. (As of 11/22  this book is a bore!...hoping for improvement)!!!

THE HARE WITH AMBER EYES BY EDMUND DE WAAL
This is a family memoir ..well crafted and Book Group quality!

A SMALL FORTUNE BY AUDREY BRAUN
This is a light steamy suspense novel similar to a romp with literary overtones. If you like Harlen Coben type books this will appeal to you.

THE KITCHEN HOUSE BY KATHLEEN GRISSOM
A peek into the life on a plantation through a white indentured servant...It's an intriguing story and a hard to put-down novel. This is a first novel  for Kathleen Grissom and I'm looking forward to her next! Take this on vacation!

MORE RECOMMENDATIONS AND REVIEWS

STONER BY JOHN WILLIAMS
This book was originally written in 1965 and reprinted in 2007. The best book I've read in years!
Simply put,  it's a beautiful, serious and moving novel about a man's life. Read it!

THE CAT'S TABLE BY MICHAEL ONDAATJE
Reviewers say this is the best novel since his Booker Prize-winning, The English Patient. The novel
tells of a journey from childhood to the adult world as well as a boat passage from a homeland to another country.

DREAMS OF JOY BY LISA SEE
A recurring theme from Lisa See's Shanghai Girls, this novel is one of those "Hard to put down" books. A story of strong willed women and unbreakable family bonds.  Better than Shanghai Girls but a bit of a soap opera feel....In spite of that, I liked it!

FICTION RECOMMENDATIONS

THE MARRIAGE PLOT  BY  JEFFREY EUGENIDES
I've loved this author(maybe that's a little strong) ever since I read Middlesex (which won the Pulitzer) many years ago.The Marriage Plot is a story about being young, bright and lost. It's a disarming novel about love and discovery..written beautifully.... although a lot of  "endless particulars"!!

RULES OF CIVILITY   BY AMOR TOWLES
I can't believe this is a first novel for Amor Towles!  Rules of Civility is witty and smart with unforgettable       characters living in a priviledged world! Set in New York in the late 30's the novel follows three friends          through a year of exciting and tragic adventures. Towles is witty and spectacular at descriptions. You  are quickly transported to another time and place. Maybe even wanting a Martini immediately!!!

PLEASE LOOK AFTER MOM  BY  SHIN KYUNG-SOOK
This book may make you gain a new sense of appreciation for everything you took for granted about your mother...or not!!!  Great story about family dynamics and relationships. Beautifully written by an eminent Korean author. I really loved this book!

THE INVISIBLE BRIDGE   BY JULIE ORRINGER
A first novel and a great achievement! This 600 page epic is a tale of war-torn lovers and survival of the luckiest...heartbreaking and moving..a holocaust page-turner..I couldn't put it down!!

INTRODUCTION TO JOYCE'S CHOICES

My name is Joyce and I love to read! When a close friend suggested blogging I thought (after a pause lasting three weeks)...why not?!!  and so JOYCE'S CHOICES was born!

I read on a Kindle or Ipad and have been a member of several book groups over the years. I have an art background and love tennis and kayaking.

Here's a little more info.....I still speak to my childhood best friend several times a week even though we are separated by many miles. I have also been married to the same man for 50 years and still speak to him!!! I divide my time between two residences and travel a bit in between.

The books listed are my choices based on reviews, favorite authors, recommendations from friends and some literary sources online and off. The titles range from best sellers to the occasional obscure novel.

Here's the list....click on Book Recommendations on the right!
