GHS AND NONFICTION (PART 2) 11/12/11

The following two well researched books on the civil war by James Swanson will keep you RIVITED! One book focuses on the assasination of Linclon and the hunt for his killer.  The other book contrasts two stories taking place at the same time...one of national mourning after Lincoln was shot and how union troops hunted down and eventually captured confederate president Jefferson Davis.

MANHUNT: THE 12 DAY CHASE TO CATCH LINCOLN'S KILLER
What I love about this book is that Swanson puts you right in the theater with Lincoln, in the streets of Washington DC and with the union troops that hunted down John Wilkes Booth.  In addition to Lincoln, attempts were made on his cabinet too which caused great fear about a last ditch attempt by the defeated south to overturn the outcome of the war.  It's a real thriller!!!

BLOODY CRIMES:THE FUNERAL OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND CHASE FOR JEFFERSON DAVIS
For me, this was the story they don't tell you about in school-and it's FASCINATING!! We learn about Jefferson Davis, the confederate president and how he lived and survived during the last stand of the confederacy.
The other story (told in alternating chapters) is about the funeral of Lincon as his body toured cities  throughout the country(I sometimes skipped this part because I was more interested in the Jefferson Davis story)..but that's my preference. Either way it's a great book!!
