Before I mention new titles here's my last comment about the much hyped novel, THE MARRIAGE PLOT by EUGENIDES (a former favorite author) It left me disappointed! I can't deny it is beautifully written. Of the three main characters the only life-like one is Leonard, the manic depressive! It was a tedious read until Leonard entered the picture...
Overall the mind-numbing details take away from the novel....I easily skipped parts without missing a thing !!
Now for new titles!!
HA -JIN the well known author of WAITING (an excellent book) is debuting his new book NANJING REQUIEM. This is the story of a missionary who helped protect and shelter Chinese citizens during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing in 1938. Should be a good historical novel.
SUE GRAFTON fans will be happy to hear that her new book V IS FOR VENGEANCE is being released November 14th.
PAULINE KAEL: A LIFE IN THE DARK by Brian Kellow has gotten excellent press. The story is told mostly through Kael's reviews (some very notorious) and if you are a film devotee...or not... it sounds like a good read!
THE NIGHT STRANGERS by Chris Bohjalian is his latest ...I liked Midwives but this sounds like a
witchcraft theme and has a lot to do with herbalists...not so sure..(unless your into Botany)
IF JACK'S IN LOVE by Steven Wetta is a first novel told with truth, humor and angst of a teenage hero.
Sounds like a touching novel told by an author who's personal experiences influenced his writing.
LAST MAN IN TOWER by Aravind Adiga is a story of money and power by the author of The White Tiger. Takes place in a rapidly changing India...suspense and vivid portrayals of people pushed to their limits
