I'm ambivalent about author Joyce Carol Oates..sometimes I'm enamoured of her books and sometimes I'm totally depressed which leads to abandonment....of the book, that is...
CARTHAGE, her newest has peaked my interest. The reviews have been excellent. Kirkus reviews called it "Knotted, tense, digressive and brilliant" ("Digressive" is what often bothers me about Oates's books)...but there's more...

She explores each member of this family unerringly as they move through the horror of a missing child, the ensuing investigation, and finally acceptance and what that means to each of them.
As in all her books, there is such raw truth in her writing we are nearly made uncomfortable by it even as we recognize it for truth. It is not difficult to dislike the petulant and churlish Cressida, but Oates draws her so expertly we come to care for her as well and feel her family's grief and loss.
This is a painful and beautiful story of loss, love, hope, change and miracles. We learn it not at once but in fits and starts over the length of the book, with Oates' usual exquisite pacing. A wonderful, compelling must-read.
MY THOUGHTS....
A giant "OY", sounds like another downer...but probably worth reading. (Reminiscent of LOVELY BONES...)
